Wilbur
A Good Samaritan found this handsome boy on Wilbur street in Amarillo during sub-freezing temperatures. We appropriately named him Wilbur. He was taken to the Animal Medical Center of Amarillo to be seen by Dr. Wick Culp for shots and to be neutered. We will know more about his age and condition soon.
Meet Wilbur! This tall, slim hound is a showstopper with unique brown eyes, a black mask across his face (think Zorro!), two bold hip patches, and a constellation of tiny black spots on his white coat. His long tail curls with elegance, completing the picture of a dog who’s beautiful and playful.
Wilbur’s journey began on Wilbur Drive in Amarillo, Texas, where a good Samaritan found him running alone. Thanks to their kindness, he made his way safely to GALT. He is estimated to be about two years old, he arrived without scars or injuries, ready to begin his next chapter.
Wilbur is affectionate and fun-loving, and happiest when close to his humans. He’s learning to manage resource guarding when snuggling; with gentle guidance, he’s making progress. Smart and adaptable, he quickly learned to use the dog door and behaves well indoors. It didn’t take long for him to discover the joys of beds and furniture – settling in like he’s always belonged.
Food and toys are Wilbur’s passions. He delights in tossing, squeaking, pouncing, and carrying toys from room to room, sometimes losing them behind the TV. Being food motivated makes training simple: he learned his name quickly, comes when called, and is slowly improving his leash skills with the help of treats.
Wilbur has a whole catalog of sounds to share his moods. He rarely barks, though when he does, it’s more of a high-pitched, puppy-like yip, as if he hasn’t quite mastered adulting. He groans sweetly when settling in, whines with joy when his foster mom comes home, and occasionally adds musical “toot” to his play bows.
Tall enough to see what’s on the counter, Wilbur is a recovering counter surfer. With consistent correction and precautions, he’s learning to resist temptation. He enjoys daily runs in the yard, patrols for squirrels, and gets along well with two small dogs and another large sighthound foster. He hasn’t been tested with cats or children.
Wilbur is a hound of heart and humor; graceful, goofy, and deeply devoted. He’s ready to bring joy, laughter, and companionship to the family lucky enough to welcome him home.
