Additional Adoption Fee Information for Luke

GALT is charging an adoption fee of $750 for Irish retired racing greyhounds 7 years and younger and $650 for those 8 and over.

The Irish greyhounds arrive to us spayed or neutered with current rabies vaccinations. The transportation cost averages $1,620 per dog, and GALT spends another approximately $400 for CBC blood work with heartworm test, Protatek testing, dental and vaccinations required for this environment.

At this time, Ireland is the current source for retired racing greyhounds. Southland track in West Memphis, AR is ceasing racing December 31, 2022. After that time there will be only 2 tracks left in West Virginia. All of those retired racers will go to adoption groups on the east coast.

For its almost 22 years in existence, GALT has operated as a 501 (c) 3 Corporation. The Irish retired racers’ adoption fee correlates to this policy.Luke’s adoption fee is: $750

Luke, aka Lukes Fizz, is a striking black male born on June 14, 2018. His sire is Skywalker Luke and his dam is Blastoff Fizz. Luke has 37 races to his credit on Greyhound Data and is from Ireland. He should not live with cats or small animals.

Luke is a gorgeous, confident and curious Irish lad. He gives you kisses and loves to be near you though he’s content left in a kennel when I’m not home. He also sleeps in the kennel as he thinks it’s a good place to relax and he’ll go there on his own if I’m staying up too late in his opinion.

He gets along with other large and medium dogs but is not really interested in them too much, that’s why I think he’d do well as an only dog in a house. He’s definitely not ok with small dogs as he doesn’t seem to separate little dogs from squirrels, anything that is small and moves is prey for him. He also knows how to use his voice, mostly it’s against the critters that are invading his front yard.

Luke walks nicely on a leash until he sees a critter, he might sprint out, so you need to have a firm grip on the leash just in case! He loves to play with toys and he does a good job entertaining himself with them, balls are the most precious toys for him, second are the ones that squeak. If you toss him a ball he’ll go get it and then likes to run a few victory laps with it.

His curious nature made him learn the stairs in just one day, also “ringing” the doorbell to go outside is coming along well. He loves going for walks and exploring the neighborhood and also likes to spend time outside, laying in the shade on the grass.

For a greyhound he’s more on the energetic side, even though he likes to sleep a lot during the day. Luke does require playtime, decent walks and a backyard to run around, so an active family in a house would be ideal for him.
