Ed, aka Ed the Farmer, was born April 1, 2023. While the rest of his siblings went to race, Ed retired before he ever got going. Twice his trainer saw him “have seizures”. It was immediately following race training (but only twice, not every time after a run), he fell over and was shaking, then he got up and was fine quickly afterward. It was determined that he does not have a medical issue, more likely he had a reaction to the preventative he was given. We don’t know yet how Ed will be with small dogs, cats or kids.

Ed, call him whatever you like; unless you have a treat in your hand, he has no clue what his name is. This young fella is loving life as an early “retiree”. Soft dog beds are a big hit, though he can’t quite get the hang of putting his entire body on one. Bed fails are a daily occurrence.

Food is his greatest passion, whether it be his own, yours, or another hound’s. Ed’s gradually learning what it means to “wait your turn”. Fortunately, his housemates are accommodating and don’t get upset. To prevent any potential conflicts, all the dogs are fed in separate areas.

It’s fun to watch him learn to play with toys and learn the ropes from the others. He’s a bit of a shoe thief so be sure your footwear is secure. So far, he just takes them to his bed and doesn’t chew them – though we do try to rescue the shoes quickly.

When he first got in a vehicle, he was hard to manage and tried to get into the front seat. He needs to be secured to avoid interference. It’s likely due to his overwhelming fear of missing out. Ed just wants to be where his people are.

Being the first time in a home, Ed is learning it’s important to give signals when he has to go out. Together we are figuring it out. So far we’ve been able to keep him off the furniture even though he sees his housemates are allowed. He’s crated when we leave the house and cries for a bit. At night he sleeps in a crate in the bedroom to avoid roaming. On walks he is a bit scattered and just excited to experience new things.

Ed is an extraordinarily sweet dog with a remarkably soft coat and affectionate eyes. He has a bit to learn and will easily adapt well to a new home given time, patience and plenty of love. Ed will do well in a home with other dogs, a yard to roam and people to adore.
