Apollo

Apollo is not only exceptionally handsome, he’s also remarkably intelligent. He easily understands basic commands such as “sit,” “lay down,” and “shake.” His strong motivation for treats helps him perform all three of these tricks on command, so long as he knows a reward is involved. Currently, we are working on reinforcing the “stay” command. However, Apollo finds it challenging to remain in place if he cannot see you, regardless of what treat is offered—his love for people and attention makes it difficult for him to resist following you. He has also mastered the “go to bed” command, promptly entering his crate whenever he hears it. A humorous example of this occurred when I told my 15-year-old son he had ten minutes before bedtime. Apollo, hearing the familiar phrase, immediately went to his crate, much to our amusement.

Attention is Apollo’s greatest delight. Unlike most dogs, his first priority upon being let out of his crate in the morning is not to go outside and relieve himself. Instead, Apollo insists on receiving affection and attention before considering anything else. Only after his need for attention is satisfied will he go outside. Despite this unique routine, Apollo displays impeccable house manners. He finds great joy in his toys and especially enjoys playing ball, eagerly catching it midair.

Apollo is highly vocal, often expressing his needs by crying. It is then up to us to interpret what he wants—whether it’s a treat, a trip outside, some attention, or help retrieving a favorite toy stuck under the couch. Deciphering his “language” can be a challenge, and for those less familiar with “speaking Apollo,” it often requires a process of elimination to understand his wishes.

Having lived with cats in his previous home, Apollo is currently being guided to become “kitty safe.” It seems he does not view the cats as prey, as he is easily redirected away from them. Instead, Apollo appears to see the cats as potential playmates. However, our shy cats are still adjusting to his communication style; they have yet to realize that his cries and chasing are simply invitations to play and spend time together.

Apollo can live as an only or with other dogs. He does have sleep startle and should not be around young children who might not know to “let sleeping dogs lie”. His ideal home would be with an active family who like to spend time in the yard playing with him and of course, doting on him!
