Balsa

Balsa, aka Atascocita Balsa, is a sweet red brindle female born on May 19, 2017. Her sire is Flying Westover and her dam is Atascocita Gold. Balsa has 131 races to her credit and gave birth to two pups. She is friendly with small dogs.

What can I say about lovely Ms. Balsa. She is a petite girl with a beautiful sugar face and is the sweetest brood momma we’ve ever fostered. She’s smart and just wants to please all the time!  She learned the dog door right away. Balsa discovered stuffies — and enjoys them until they squeak, then drops them for someone else to play with!

She has great house manners, loves a soft dog bed and does not get on the furniture (even when tempted by other dogs!) She is not protective of her food and allows other dogs to eat nearby without any fussing or complaints. She stays in her bed while food is being prepped — and will come to her bowl as soon as she is called.

She cries and paces when someone in the home leaves. Even with other dogs and/or a 2nd person in the home, she has a touch of separation anxiety and lets it be known! Balsa is the definition of a Velcro dog.  If it’s moving (human or canine), she wants to follow it closely and see where it leads!

Balsa would LOVE to go on a walk multiple times each day and gets excited (jumps around) at the thought of a walk or car ride. She’s good on a leash and is not bothered by neighborhood dogs barking their “hellos” to her.

Balsa LOVES to run, so a yard is highly recommended; just watch out for the pool.  She enjoys chasing/racing with other hounds or running by herself. She’s so sweet and loves human-contact, nose-nuzzles and petting.  She’s happy just standing-and-staring if you’re doing something interesting (cooking, typing on a computer, doing housework, etc.)  Balsa is not afraid of the nail grinder, vacuum, the water hose spraying, pool pump noises, etc. – all the things that have terrified previous hounds.

Balsa is quick and sneaky though. We barely crack the sliding door to go into the backyard, and she can sneak through the opening and wait for us outside.  For this reason, we have a baby gate installed between the front door and the living room — one more barrier to make sure she doesn’t make one of those wily moves out the front door.

This little girl is wonderful with dogs of all sizes and will be a wonderful addition to any home. She is just the sweetest!
