Additional Adoption Fee Information
GALT is charging an adoption fee of $750 for Australian retired racing greyhounds 7 years and younger and $650 for those 8 and over.
The Australian greyhounds arrive to us spayed or neutered with current rabies vaccinations. The transportation cost averages $1,620 per dog, and GALT spends another approximately $400 for CBC blood work with heartworm test, Protatek testing, dental and vaccinations required for this environment.
For its almost 22 years in existence, GALT has operated as a 501 (c) 3 Corporation. The Australian retired racers’ adoption fee correlates to this policy.
This hound’s adoption fee is: $750
Naz is a sweet young black female from Australia born November 12, 2021. Naz never raced and is not individually registered, so we do not know her lineage.
Naz is a big personality in a tiny little greyhound wrapper – she’s 55 pounds, but she’s also short with the tiniest little cute pixie head. Naz has traveled well with one other hound in the car, laying down and having a nice nap for the ride. She has, however, been uncomfortable when all the hounds load up for the weekly pack walk, so she either catches her own solo ride or gets a crate because we know that sometimes it’s tough to be the little one in the crowd. Naz does love to get to go and loads easily into our van; she needs help jumping into higher vehicles.
Naz hasn’t been small animal tested here but hasn’t shown much interest with critters in the yard or small dogs we see on walks. Naz enjoys the company of male hounds and her best forever home would be with another young-ish male playmate. Naz is very playful with her foster companion Buddy, playing gentle bitey face, fun chases in the yard, and shares toys nicely with him when they play. Naz also loves her people and is content to play with her human in the yard too without hound company, so she may be able to live as an only dog if her people are around a lot.
Naz has never had an accident and is fully house trained. She hasn’t been left alone for any appreciable amount of time yet so we don’t know how she will be, but note she loves her crate overnight and sleeps like a champ until you open the door. She even seeks the comfort of her crate during the day sometimes for a nice quiet nap. Naz is a good eater and is eating in proximity to her foster brother without any guarding or issues. Naz does, however, need to be segregated for long lasting high value chews – as she is not about to let anyone take it away from her. She’s been otherwise fine to share space, toys, and her crate without incident.
Like in the van, Naz isn’t a big fan of crowds so we are working on slowly socializing her with big groups like Pack Walk. She is good about giving a little signal to let folks know she needs some space. Naz is very sociable and affectionate at home with her people and makes an excellent boss of the male hounds (her supervisory skills have not been appreciated by the female here). While a little shy in public she is very outgoing at home and you never have to wonder if she’s happy – as her tail never stops wagging or her back-end wiggling.
Having just turned three, she still has some puppy-ish energy and benefits from a nice walk per day (on a harness) and a little yard time to run zoomies and fling toys. When that work is done, she knows how to kick back and relax – hanging out with the family until bedtime. Naz also still has a little bit of a tendency to take and move things like shoes, but so far the only damage was one shoelace. Her future home should continue to work on safety around doors, continuing her training to stay back (as she can be a bolter – so gates are strongly recommended). Her recall is coming along very well though and she usually trots back in the house from the yard on command.
Naz has been wonderfully compliant with nail maintenance and bathing and seems to be a fast learner that is food motivated; so, we predict it won’t take long until this little pixie is the perfect companion in her forever home. If you need more wiggle and wag in your life, Naz may be the perfect one for you!
