Jet

Jet came to GALT from a hoarding situation in Killeen, TX.  He and his sister Li’l Princess are believed to be a Saluki/Dalmatian mix, born in early 2023. Our dedicated team have worked with them to earn their trust and are doing well with leash training. Jet is cat tolerant.

Let’s talk about how absolutely handsome this boy is!! His long flowing locks and floofs are striking. He LOVES being brushed (outside of course), which can be a daily occurrence. That said, the “fluff bunnies” we get in the house are significant. It’s a small price to pay to have your very own petite Fabio-looking photogenic hound. As a Saluki/Dalmatian mix, the Saluki genes are strong in this one. He has all the physical attributes and jumping ability of a Saluki while his sister got more of the Dalmatian stamina gene.

Needless to say, Jet has come a long way since he came to GALT in 2023. It took several months for him to go from a scared feral boy to a well-adjusted fun-loving pet. Jet can sometimes revert to a few old habits. He can be very nervous and protective when startled – when he hears unfamiliar sounds he needs to be reminded that everything is OK. He occasionally fear barks until he gets confirmation that nothing bad is going to happen. For this reason, he needs a family that is understanding and patient to help him adjust to new surroundings. Good news – he likes the crate and feels safe in there. When we first brought him to our home, I put a long leash on him and kept part of it outside the crate. This way he followed the lead without me having to reach in and startle him. For a few days we discovered the yard and house while tethered, until he was comfortable to roam around without being scared. Now, Jet follows me EVERYWHERE! Let’s just say, with Jet – you can have your very own “potty” guard! Also, being the opportunist that he is, Jet will be nearby whenever someone is in the kitchen.

He is very food motivated. This silly boy thinks ice cubes are a treat and happily trots off with his prize while the other dogs just roll their eyes. Jet patiently waits his turn for real treats and is very gentle when he takes them from your hand. He is the one that ensures his housemates clean their bowls. His bathroom habits are impeccable, and he does his business like clockwork. Any time he goes outside, he will relieve himself – even when he’s fixated on something in the tree!

Jet knows his name and can usually be distracted from something interesting like a squirrel or lizard. He walks beautifully with the pack. For added protection he wears a harness and his leash is clipped to both his martingale collar and harness. Because he’s a Saluki, he is quite a jumper so we also have a GPS collar on him. Surprisingly, Jet takes his downtime seriously. With his GPS device we can also track his sleep and activity habits. He sleeps through the night in his crate and naps like a greyhound during the day. In the morning he enjoys playing with our female hounds in a rousing game of big-mouth-bitey-face and chasing each other inside or in the backyard. He’s been known to empty the toy box a time or two. He’s good about knowing what’s a toy and what’s not. He likes ALL kinds of toys – hard, squeaky, crinkly and unstuffed (they may have been that way before he arrived).

While he can live with cats, Jet will always need the company of other dogs in the house with a yard and tall fence to make his world complete. Jet is not a cuddly “plug and play” dog. Quick movements startle Jet and we feel small children would be too active for him. He needs extra time to get to know people, so he’s not going to be the gregarious one you take to dog-friendly places for a while. Jet has a BIG bark for a little fella – he will run to the door when someone knocks or if he hears a doorbell (or another dog) on TV. There are too many unfamiliar sounds for Jet to live in an apartment. He’s a special young dog looking for an understanding family to guide him.
