Skye

Skye is a young petite girl from Australia. She has a soft coat and the prettiest little face with big round eyes. Her early pictures show her as a blonde fawn, but that was her sun-bleached Aussie coat. Now she is a tawny fawn with a dark tail, black edging to her ears and muzzle and eyeliner that reached almost to her ears.

Sounds like a placid sweetie, right? Well, she is sweet, but placid, oh no. When she first got to us, she was pretty much a wild child and it has been fun watching her settle into being a lovely affectionate pup.

At first, we weren’t sure if she really knew her name. When she was doing something, she wouldn’t stop or come when she was called. There was nothing wrong with her hearing – she can hear the treat bag rustling from halfway across the house. She would get over-excited or turn stubborn about pretty much anything, maybe because she is a teenager and has a teenager brain that wants to do what it wants to do when it is doing it. She is better about commands now, probably because of that treat bag. She loves food and is VERY food motivated.

She is quiet and does not bark at people at the door. She will whine and get all excited when one of us leaves the house. She crates and can get whiny when the door is closed and we leave. Sometimes she puts herself in the crate just because. She is not reactive at all to noise outside the house including the dog who barks next door.

She loves soft squeaky toys, andignores all other types. She carries squeakies all over the house. (Her forever family needs to be OK with eeck, eeck, eecks in the background.) Sometimes she wakes up in the middle of the night and lays there chewing on a toy or squeaking a toy in the dark of night. We now make sure all toys are out of the bedroom where we all sleep! Skye plays fetch with her toys and returns the toy to your hand, one of our few fosters who has learned that trick.

Skye loves walks and outings and goes nuts if the leads come out, even if it is not hers. She is good in the car. She only does short excursions to our large backyard and then returns to be with us. She is something of a Velcro dog that way. She does not need another dog to be happy and was a bit intimidating to our male greyhound when she first got here. Now there is peaceful coexistence, because she just isn’t that interested in him. She has also learned to ignore our parakeet.

Her prey drive is high although she doesn’t lunge at squirrels on walks. We did let her out back one night after dark and 10 minutes later she was back with an adult possum in her mouth, still alive, though rather stunned (like us!).

Skye now comes in for snuggles and she especially likes to stand by the bed and get an evening lovings session when we have gone to bed. She has become the sweetie dog she looks like and will make someone a lovely friend.
