Donate to the The Dr. E. Kelly Nitsche Veterinary Care Fund

Help greyhounds with special medical needs

The VCA Animal Diagnostic Clinic in Dallas, Texas, has recognized the retirement of Dr. E. Kelly Nitsche by establishing a medical care fund in his honor. GALT is extremely thankful to be the recipient of this benevolent gesture.

The Miss Mesa Fund has been, by unanimous vote of the GALT Board of Directors, renamed, "The Dr. E. Kelly Nitsche Veterinary Care Fund" effective June 30, 2020. Just as before, contributions to this fund will be used to pay the cost of medical care for GALT greyhounds and other sighthounds in need as outlined in our Mission Statement.

Help with special needs of stray or injured greyhounds

Greyhound strays are a very common occurrence in the DFW area. Over 25% of the greyhounds brought into GALT's program have been strays. These strays are the most neglected - being abandoned and left to fend for themselves by the irresponsible behavior of some when their racing days are over. Often times greyhounds are used for coyote hunting and match racing, which is an illegal form of backyard greyhound racing.

It is not unusual for these greyhounds to be extremely malnourished, heartworm positive, suffer from an array of tick borne diseases and other debilitating parasites. These are the greys that need the most medical rehabilitation which translates into being the greys that require the most expensive treatment. Their lives are at risk if they are not rescued and nursed back to health.

Angel's Strays has been created in memory of Angel, beloved 14-year-old greyhound of Greyhound Adoption League of Texas, Inc. founding members, Susie and John McQuade. Angel was their first greyhound and became the driving force in their passion for this magnificent breed. Her spirit and their love for her will live on in their work with GALT. Angel's history, like many of GALT's strays, was never known because her right ear tattoo was illegible, so it is fitting that she is watching over them.

Please help GALT save the lives of stray or injured greyhounds by making a tax deductible donation, either online through the GreytStore, through PayPal, or by sending your check to 3400 Carlisle St #310, Dallas, TX 75204-1265. Please note Angel's Strays Fund on the check comment line. Donations to this fund may be used to assist other Greyhounds in need as outlined in our Mission Statement.

Help pay for boarding costs for greyhounds waiting for foster homes

Have you reached your limit on household paws but would still like to help our hounds?

Greyhound Adoption League of Texas receives its greyhounds from many sources - breeders, trainers, owner releases, shelters, and strays. In addition to these sources, GALT operated for seven years as the exclusive adoption outlet for greyhounds retiring, grading out, and hurt at Valley Race Park in Harlingen, TX, a seasonal track that closed in April 2009.

Providing quality care for the hounds-in-waiting simply requires a lot of money. The average boarding stay for an adoptable hound is approximately 4 weeks. GALT's daily cost to board and care for hounds not in foster homes is $10 per day per dog which includes the following:

  • Food (two meals a day)
  • Climate controlled kennel
  • Multiple daily kennel cleanings
  • Staff monitoring (4 times/day)

GALT provides each dog with the following items which are in addition to average daily expense per dog:

  • Kuranda Bed
  • Fleece Blanket (in winter)
  • Fleece Coat (in winter)
  • Tick, Flea, Heartworm and Internal Parasite treatments
  • Daily onsite health/behavior monitoring

Even a donation for one day of boarding ($10) will help us help the hounds! Help GALT's hounds who are waiting patiently in our boarding facilities by donating online through the GreytStore, through PayPal, or by sending your check to 3400 Carlisle St #310, Dallas, TX 75204-1265. Please note House a Hound Fund on the check comment line. Donations to this fund may be used to assist other Greyhounds in need as outlined in our Mission Statement.

Blazer's Guardian Angels

Consider joining Blazer's Guardian Angels and honor one of your Rainbow Bridge greys by sponsoring one of GALT's Injured Reserve hounds

Cher and Chip Imrie recently started this special new program for GALT in memory of their beloved first grey, Blazer, who traveled to the Rainbow Bridge on April 22, 2016. This sweet boy was born on Christmas Day in 2002, and he brought many years of joy to his forever parents and his grey sibling, Silvia. Chip and Cher were devastated by Blazer's passing but decided to do something in his memory to help another GALT grey in need. They decided that Blazer would become the "Guardian Angel" for sweet Victoria, a very small fawn female grey in critical condition who was surrendered by a coyote hunter in Tulia, Texas. Victoria has come a long way after several months in GALT's care, and she is finally through with all of her treatments and medical procedures. Victoria is now ready to hit the Meet and Greet circuit so she can find her forever home! Significant medical expenses have been incurred by GALT to treat her open wound, eye and skin infections, Ehrlichia Canis and severe parasite infections. Read more about Victoria's story here.

Cher and Chip have generously donated the funds to cover the medical expenses required to get Victoria fully healthy and available for adoption. The back of Victoria's permanent GALT tag will be inscribed with the following notation:

IN MEMORY OF

Angel Blazer

RIP 4/22/16

If you would like to join Blazer's Guardian Angels and honor one of your Rainbow Bridge greys by sponsoring one of GALT's Injured Reserve hounds in this manner, please contact Susie McQuade (smcquade@galtx.org) or Barbara Christian (bchristian@galtx.org).

Donate to The Amanda and Emmet Golden Years Fund

Adopting a senior greyhound is the best kept secret in the greyhound world!

The Amanda and Emmet Golden Years Fund was established in 2018 by Linda and Rick Vayo of Massachusetts in honor of their beloved senior greyhounds-AMANDA & EMMET. This Fund will aid in the medical expenses of senior greyhounds that enter into GALT’s care as well as subsidizing medical costs of eligible adopted senior greyhounds on an “as needed basis”. This fund enables GALT to continue to keep its promise of “No Grey Turned Away” regardless of a hound’s age. Please join in contributing to this Fund’s worthy cause.

Donate via The Donor Advised Fund

A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a centralized charitable account. It allows charitably-inclined individual, families and businesses to make tax-deductible charitable donations of cash, publicly-traded stock and in some case, certain illiquid assets, to a public charity that sponsors a DAF program.

To donate via DAF Direct, you need to have an account with one of the following: Fidelity Charitable; Greater Kansas City CF; Schwab Chartiable or BNF Mellon. Once you have selected the fund, entered a designation (general fund, medical costs, for example) and an amount, you will be taken to your selected institution to complete your transaction.

Legacy Giving

Consider Creating a Legacy for the Greyhounds Through Your Will

Nobody likes to think about the need for a will, but having a will brings peace of mind that your assets will be dispersed in accordance with your wishes. When you make a will, please consider a gift to GALT to create a lasting legacy for the future of the greyhounds. By naming GALT as a beneficiary, you may specify how you would like your gift to be used. Include a sentence in your will such as "I give __ (specify the amount or percentage of residue) to the Greyhound Adoption League of Texas, a tax exempt organization for the purpose of assisting greyhounds in need." GALT will make sure your legacy gift will be applied towards our mission in accordance with your wishes.
