Puma, aka Killer Puma, is a 2-year-old red brindle male born July 10, 2012. His sire is Kiowa Sweet Trey and his dam is Killer Tiger. Puma has 17 races on record, all at Gulf Greyhound Park. He started his short career on May 22, 2014 and it ended on October 2, 2014 with a broken right rear hock.
Puma has not yet been tested with cats or other small animals. He is scheduled for surgery on October 7 at the Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center.
Surgery was performed on Tuesday, October 7, 2104, by Dr. Bob Radasch of the Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center. Puma's injury consisted of multiple fractures in his right rear leg involving both sides of the hock. (The lateral aspect of the calcaneous and a central grade IV tarsal bone fracture, with a small chip fracture close to the calcaneous also.) This was a very difficult repair using multiple bone screws in the two separate areas. Weekly bandage changes will be needed for the next 8 weeks. Dr. Radasch feels technically the surgery went well with Puma; however with the severity of the injuries, only time will tell if he will exhibit long term lameness.
Dr. Radasch expects to take x-rays and hopefully remove Puma's splint by December 8. Then it will be 3-4 weeks of leash walking while he completes his medical procedures.
Puma is using his leg fairly consistently now, and has completed his medical procedures. He's ready to find a home!
