Charlie is one of 9 greyhounds GALT received from a Fort Worth Animal Control cruelty case. He is a spunky, 2-year-old grey boy. Charlie absolutely loves attention and wags his tail the entire time. Charlie was sweet right from the start - he is truly a "Wal-Mart greeter" type of a boy. Just like the other rescued dogs, he is positive to babesia as well as ehrlichia at extremely high titers and has a huge load of intestinal parasites. He is being treated for all.

UPDATE 7/26/10

Charlie was seen by Dr. Christy Soileau at Preston Park Animal Hospital last week for a check-up. Like so many of the others, Charlie has considerable alopecia, scaling skin, and crusting skin on his ears. Dr. Soileau elected to give a long-lasting antibiotic injection to help battle the skin condition. Charlie had a cyst on his right haunch, which was drained during the visit. The swelling from the cyst has reduced in size and is being monitored. Charlie is being treated with Doxycycline for 4 more weeks due to ehrlichia.

UPDATE 8/6/10

Charlie is eating well, and is doing pretty good aside from being a little itchy. He's starting to grow some hair back!

UPDATE 9/22/10

Charlie was taken in for medical treatment for what seemed to be an ear infection on September 10. Because of the extreme inflamation, he was put on steriods for several days. Even after that, Charlie would not tolerate his ear being scoped and examined. Under sedation it was discovered there was a mass in his ear canal. Cytology reports indicated a bioposy should be done. On September 21, a biopsy was performed by Dr. Dana Liska of the Animal Dermatology Referral Clinic on this mass in his right ear canal. Results will take at least 5-7 business days to be completed, and at that time a determination will be made for the removal of only the mass or possibly his entire ear canal.

UPDATE 10/1/10

The results of the biopsy were received September 30 by Dr. Liska. The test indicated a high probability of cancer, so surgery was scheduled for Friday, October 1 with Dr. Greg Arnold of the Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center. Charlie’s entire right ear canal was removed, and the tumor was submitted for further testing. At this time, Charlie is resting comfortably and will stay in the hospital over the weekend.

UPDATE 10/6/10

A tumor was found in Charlie's right ear canal, which was removed October 1 by Dr. Greg Arnold of the Dallas Surgical Center. The mass in his ear dictated a total ear canal ablation. Results have been received which show this is a low grade malignant ceruminous gland adenocarcinoma. Dr. Arnold states that the tumor excision was complete, and the surgery should be curative. Charlie is in a lot of pain at this time, and he is being closely monitored by his foster parents.
