Hammer, aka D O Slam Hammer, is a stunningly handsome, 6-year-old black male born March 5, 2005. His sire is Oshkosh Slammer and his dam is KB's Lynsey Ann. Hammer ran all of his 76 races at Gulf Greyhound Park in LaMarque, Texas, beginning October 13, 2006 and finishing on February 13, 2008. 54 of his 76 races were either Grade A, AA, or Stakes races, proving that he did quite well as a racer. Hammer enjoyed retirement in a home for two years, but has since been returned due to no fault of his own.
Hammer is cat and small dog tolerant.
Hammer is a very laid back dog with perfect house manners. And I do mean PERFECT. He doesn't counter surf, hasn't even thought of getting on the furniture, has not had a single accident in the house, and is just an all-around gentleman. Nothing seems to rattle Hammer, he adjusts very easily to any situation. He likes other dogs, and not just greyhounds. He has proven to be small dog safe and he completely ignores my two cats.
I call him Helper Dog because he always wants to be there to assist me. If I'm in the kitchen making dinner he is right under my left elbow, giving me encouragement. If I'm moving from room to room, he's there at my side in case I get lost or need a snout to pet. When he takes a nap he is always within 3 feet of where I am, in case I should need his assistance suddenly. Helper Dog is very sweet, and he loves to have his ears rubbed and scratched. He will lean into your hand like a cat, and push his head against you if you dare to stop the scritching.
Hammer is a great walker and seems to love to walk, if only to be where you are. He waits patiently for the leash, doesn't pull, and is happy with either a short walk or long stroll. But what he REALLY loves is a car ride. He likes to look out the windows and will settle down nicely, but if you have the windows down he will spend the entire drive with his ears in the wind, sniffing the good sniffs. He would spend hours with his head out the car window if you would oblige him. I've also discovered he likes bones and raw turkey necks. I haven't given him any rawhide, but I'm guessing he would like that too.
I believe Hammer would do best with another dog, but it definitely doesn't have to be a greyhound. He doesn't like to be left all alone but does just great if he is left with another dog. He would also do fine in a home with children.
If you are looking for a super sweet, laid back, low maintenance hound, Hammer is the guy for you. Just give him the occasional car ride, a few turkey necks, and a lot of ear rubs and he will help you with anything that needs doing around your house. Unconditional love is his specialty.
