Elizabeth was surrendered to the Animal Control officer in Tulia, TX by a coyote hunter. She is not tattooed and appears to be approximately 4-5 years old. It is obvious she has had several litters of pups. She was infested with ticks and fleas when she was picked up, so it was no surprise that Elizabeth had a positive titer to Ehrlichia Canis. Her eyes were also cloudy indicating cataracts. She has been successfully treated for the Ehrlichia Canis. She is under the care of Dr. Robert Munger of Animal Ophthalmology Clinic for cataracts. She has limited vision in her left and right eyes. Medication is being administered in the form of daily drops which seems to have stopped any further inflammation and progression. Elizabeth needs to be in a home with another dog who can help "show her the way". Elizabeth is not cat or small animal tolerant at this time.
Elizabeth was seen on June 17 by Dr. Robert Munger of Animal Ophthalmology Clinic for cataracts. She has limited vision in her left eye and her right one also shows some loss. This is the result of inflammation most likely from her Ehrlichia. Medication is being administered to hopefully stop any further inflammation and progression. Elizabeth will be seen again in 30 days.
Elizabeth was seen by Dr. Munger on August 2nd. There has been no further progression of the degeneration in her right or left eyes. She is getting eye drops in each eye twice a day, which it is expected to continue indefinitely at this time. Elizabeth has a negative PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) test and has completed her treatment for Ehrlichia Canis as well as all of her medical procedures.
Miss Elizabeth -- funny little lovey! I have had this little one now for several months and she has really "bloomed". With her limited eyesight she most definitely needs an older dog as a leader and, if possible, someone who is home all or most of the day in case she happens to stuck behind something and can't get herself out. She needs a constant pattern (no change of furniture or toys in the pathway). Elizabeth sleeps well at night although she likes to have her bed near the door where there is a night lite so it gives off a little light for her. Has a good appetite and eats twice a day with 1 1/2 cups of dry kibble and then some treats in between meals; no table scraps. She does not get up on the furniture but does hop up on my bed where she does sleep sometimes.
Elizabeth loves squeaky toys and plays with them a lot but mostly she just prefers to be close to me and or one of my dogs – she would stand for hours if you would continue to pet her. She should not live cats, small dogs or little children. Because of her limited eyesight, she does growl as a defense mechanism. Elizabeth’s a low maintenance sweetie pie and will be great company for the right family.
